Mattress Springs May Help Cushion Runners from Incurring Injuries

Researchers in the U.K created a design for sneakers that utilizes tiny springs typically used in mattresses to grip the shock when the foot strikes the ground. Jim Richards, a researcher at the University of Central Lancashire said injuries happen to more than 70 percent of leisure runners annually, despite of the improvements in the design of running shoes being put out on the market.

“Shockwaves are generated when a runner’s foot hits the ground, which may lead to foot and leg injuries such as shin splints, runner’s knee, or stress fractures,” states Elizabeth Palermo of TechNewsDaily. "If you had a car suspension with just a damper and no spring in it, then you'd have a very bumpy ride," Richards quoted in a statement regarding this year's Summer Science Exhibition. "Therefore, having a shoe that incorporates both provides a much-improved shock-absorbing system compared with existing technology."

While the creation of this product hopes to help prevent injury, injuries may still occur. If you have sustained an injury while running or wish to learn more about how to prevent running injuries you should seek out the care of a podiatrist such as Dr. Jack Gorman of Bux-Mont Foot & Ankle Care Centers. Dr. Gorman can diagnose any injuries you may have as well as provide you with treatment options.

How to Prevent Running Injuries

Many common running injuries are caused by overuse and overtraining. When the back of the kneecap starts wearing out and starts causing pain in your knee, this is commonly referred to as runner’s knee. Runner’s knee is a decrease in strength in your quadriceps and can occur if you’re not wearing properly fitted or supporting shoes. Runner’s knee usually is treated with strengthening exercises focusing on the quad muscles and sports orthotic.
