What Are Corns?
A corn is a type of callus that often forms on the top or side of the toes. They are not usually painful when left alone, but can be if pressed. Corns can be caused by friction on the skin, usually from wearing uncomfortable shoes.
There are two types of corns:
- Hard corns – Small, bumps that appear on firm areas of skin, usually near a callus
- Soft corns – White, rubbery-looking corns that often appear between the toes
What Are Calluses?
A callus is a skin that has been thickened in response to irritation. Callus formations are a defensive mechanism designed to protect the body from damage. Calluses usually build up on the bottom of the foot, and they are much bigger than corns.
In most cases, calluses are not a major cause for concern. However, if you have a painful callus or one that lasts for a long period, or if you have diabetes, you should have it examined by a podiatrist.
How Do We Remove a Corn & Callus?
For the removal of large corns & calluses, our podiatrist will use a surgical blade to reduce the size and gently shave the dead thick, skin away. The entire treatment is ultimately painless since the skin is already dead and if a corn or callus keeps appearing, then additional treatments may be needed. We will discuss surgical intervention that if we determine you are not responding well to the given treatment or it’s causing you furthering pain.
